25,000 letters sent out by Nigerian lottery scam every day
The police have arrested 53 Nigerian people in Malaga in connection with the Nigerian lottery scam. With this arrest which took place on Wednesday, the police had managed to break up another Spanish lottery scam.
This capture gave the National Police of Malaga more information on the Nigerian network. This group was part of the organization, ‘Operacion Loto’, which managed to send out about 25,000 letters from Malaga, everyday.
These letters were sent to addresses around the world which read that the recipients had won the Spanish lottery. The victims were then invited to send administrative fees for the release of the winnings of the Spanish lottery.
The police think that at least 2 people out of every 1,000 people who had received the letter had sent the money to the Malaga group. And with this maneuver, the Malaga group had managed to make 27 million in the scam. However the police think that this amount is nothing when compared to the possible 250 million that they might have made.
In making the arrest, the police had searched 34 phone call shops and 19 homes where they had managed to impound about 30 lap top computers and 20 other computers. In addition to this, they had managed to recover more than 100,000 letters that were to be sent, 150 mobile phones and some money in counterfeit notes.
