Skill is more important than luck in poker
The latest in an online magazine Science Daily states that skill is more important than luck to win at poker. The magazine states that Michael DeDonno, who is a doctoral student from Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University, had conducted two studies with students, where he found that skill won over luck in winning at poker.
DeDonno first had 41 students play eight games with 200 hands of turbo Texas. Most of the students had little experience with poker. However half of them were given charts of 2 card combinations ranging from the best to the worst combinations. They were then informed that professional poker players played only about 15% of the hands they were dealt.
The other half of students were provided background on poker but were not taught any strategies and did not fare as well as the other group who had strategies to follow. Before conducting this study, it was stated that 64% of the students thought that it was possible to win poker with 50% luck.
DeDonno then conducted another study to verify the study with students playing 720 hands. The group was divided and while students improved their game with practice, it was the group that was provided with strategies that did better in their game.
DeDonno also found out that students used reduced number of hands when provided with strategies. this showed that fewer hands really do result in improved performance in a game of poker.
